The most common and simple type is the spur gearbox. Although this simple type works well, it tends to make noises and pressure. This disadvantage seem to work for low-speed and low-impact works only.

Another type is the helical gearbox that has some similarities to the spur gearbox. The teeth of the helical gearbox are not positioned in a lateral manner to the spinning axis, which is different to the spur gearbox, and are laid at an angle of 90 degrees. Therefore, its position is laid out parallel or crossed. There is slow engagement between the teeth of a helical gear thus producing no noise when being worked. The drawback for helical gearboxes is that the shaft bearings are constantly oiled because the thrust load it produces because of the inclined contact.

This makes it ideal for low-speed type or those with low gear ratios.

The load is shared between gears which makes it possible for the high work efficiency.
