How To Differentiate The Various Types Of Gearboxes
When you have a damaged equipment that involves a repair of the gearbox, you must have a background knowledge of the types of gearboxes to know what repair service to avail. Key factors such as speed, gear ratio, noise, torque, pressure and the orientation of the shafts are just some that will help differentiate the gearboxes. Here are the various gearbox types that you need to know.
The most common and simple type is the spur gearbox. The way the radial teeth are positioned makes it able to handle gear ratios at high level and at the same time provide a level of efficiency at about 98 percent. Although this simple type works well, it tends to make noises and pressure. This disadvantage seem to work for low-speed and low-impact works only.
Another type is the helical gearbox that has some similarities to the spur gearbox. The teeth of the helical gearbox are not positioned in a lateral manner to the spinning axis, which is different to the spur gearbox, and are laid at an angle of 90 degrees. Therefore, its position is laid out parallel or crossed. There is slow engagement between the teeth of a helical gear thus producing no noise when being worked. Therefore, helical gearbox is desirable for high torques as it provides 98 percent level of efficiency. The drawback for helical gearboxes is that the shaft bearings are constantly oiled because the thrust load it produces because of the inclined contact.
What Do You Know About Machines
The bevel gearbox is another type that is composed of two shafts crossing at each other and have teeth that are shaped like a cone. This produces a versatile movement in between the shafts. The axis form of the shafts of the bevel allow it to handle pressure in higher amounts. This system’s work efficiency ranges from 93 to 97 level of percentage. This makes it ideal for low-speed type or those with low gear ratios.
Finding Similarities Between Products and Life
Spiral bevel and hypoid bevel are two sub-types of bevel gearboxes. The slow movement of the teeth of a spiral bevel makes it similar to helical. The process then produces smooth work with lesser noise produced. It also produces the same high level of work efficiency reaching at 98 percent. The other type which is the hypoid gearbox is somehow similar to the spiral but the axis are not touching at each other. It is ideal for high speed ratios as it produces a powerful 90 degree driving shaft but with no noises. But regarding its efficiency, it only produces 85 percent of work.
The type of gearbox that is made with many gears revolving at an inner gear is called the planetary gearbox. This system runs at a low speed and produces a work efficiency of 98 percent. This system is compact, produce high gear differentials per stage, and also produces three times the level of torque compared to the work of the spur gearbox. The load is shared between gears which makes it possible for the high work efficiency.
There are many aspects and uses of gearboxes and each has different efficiency levels. For the gearboxes to work efficiently, there must be a maintenance done and repair if needed.
